 Come join us in the Garden Room at Faculty House, where Students and Music Associates from Columbia University's Music Performance Program will be showcased in a noontime recital series.

BIOGRAPHY

Alec Hon is a junior at Columbia University, where he is majoring in Chemistry and concentrating in Music and Mathematics. A resident of Southern California, Alec has won numerous awards from the area, and has played with local orchestras, such as the Mount Saint Mary College Orchestra, the South Coast Symphony, and the Bellflower Symphony Orchestra. As a member of Southern California’s Junior Chamber Music, Alec has toured in Austria, Estonia, Finland, and Russia. Alec participates in Columbia University’s Music Performance Program, where he has been selected to play in Carnegie Weill Recital Hall. He has participated in masterclasses with Robert DeMaine, Ilya Finkelshteyn, Donald and Vivian Weilerstein, the Pacifica Quartet, the Muir String Quartet, etc.. Alec is currently the principal cellist of the Columbia University Orchestra, and has served as principal cellist in his high school orchestra as well as summer festival orchestras. This spring, as the winner of the 2017 Columbia University Orchestra Concerto Competition, Alec will perform with the orchestra at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center.

Alec has attended the Aspen Music Festival and School twice, where he studied with Mr. Brinton Smith, principal cellist of the Houston Symphony. He has also attended the National Orchestral Institute and Festival, where he has recorded for the Naxos label in an album to be released later in 2017.  A recipient of the Music Performance Program’s Dolan Prize and Richard and Brooke Kamin Rapaport Summer Music Fellowship, Alec currently studies with Mr. Darrett Adkins, faculty of the Juilliard School, and has studied with Mr. Patrick Jee, member of the New York Philharmonic, and Mr. Ben Hong, associate principal of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

 

Nineteen-year- old Dean Deng first started playing the piano twelve years ago, and has since earned various awards and accolades. Most recently, he has won first prize at the 2015 International Virtuoso Competition, and was a finalist in the 2014 New York International Piano Competition. Dean is a graduate of the Precollege Division of the Manhattan School of Music, where he began studying with Maria Asteriadou. He has appeared as a soloist with orchestras including the Manhattan School Repertory Orchestra, Stamford Young Artists Philharmonic, and the Kutztown University Orchestra. Dean is also an enthusiast of new music. From 2012 to 2014, he was an active member of Face the Music, a new music ensemble based in New York. As part of Face the Music, he has been featured with the International Contemporary Ensemble on WQXR. Dean is a composer as well, and has performed his works with groups such as the String Orchestra of Brooklyn. Dean is currently a sophomore at Columbia University, where he studies computer science.
