What year are you at Columbia?

Senior

What are/will you be majoring in?

Music major, computer science concentration

How long have you been a participant of the MPP?

Since first semester of freshman year.

How have you benefited by MPP programs and performance opportunities?

I have played in a jazz combo every year, directed by great instructors such as Ole Mathisen and Bruce Barth. I have been fortunate to have been awarded the Dolan Prize each year to fund vibraphone lessons with the legendary Steve Nelson. I have also participated in the Jazz Composers Collective concerts and the first two studio recording sessions for jazz composers and arrangers.

Any tips on how a student might be able to fully take advantage of all the musical offerings at Columbia?

All the auditions for ensembles and lessons at Columbia take place early on in the fall semester, so it’s important to be prepared.  Research what you’d like to be involved in, and email the MPP office or ask a current student for more information or advice.

How do you balance the busy academic schedule with practice time? any tips?

Often, my academic priorities can make practicing difficult, but I definitely prioritize practicing when I have an upcoming performance, recording, or audition.  Although at times my practice time has not been ideal, at least I get to play music with others at least three times a week between combo at Columbia and a jazz ensemble at Juilliard.

What was the most memorable musical experience in your life?

I am a member of the Jazz House, a Special Interest Community for jazz musicians.   In March 2015 we performed a concert of all Pokémon music, and in October we did a concert of all Super Mario music. We drew a large and enthusiastic audience for both concerts, and they were just really fun musical experiences. We have a Legend of Zelda concert planned for the spring.

What does making music mean to you?

Expressing myself, communicating with others, and making people feel good.

Anything you would like to share with the readers? (favorite food, Summer activities, favorite quote, etc)

I am excited to be co-composing/lyricizing the 122nd Annual Varsity Show!
