BIOGRAPHY
Annie Nikunen (BC '20) is a flutist from Northport, NY, and sophomore at Barnard College of Columbia University, studying music with interests in flute performance, theory, composition and musicology. Annie participates in Columbia’s MPP, studying privately with Sue Ann Kahn and pursuing chamber under Kenneth Cooper and Susan Rotholz. She is also part of CUO, Columbia Bach Society, pit orchestras, Columbia New Music, CCP concerts, and Barnard Flute Choir, of which she is co-music director. Annie also sings, having traveled internationally to England/Scotland with her high school tour choir and to Switzerland with the Barnard-Columbia Chorus this past May. She’s a programmer with Columbia’s WKCR, and interns with Lyric Chamber Music Society of New York, which hosts concerts for aspiring professional musicians. During the summers, she plays in the Northport Community Band and is a teaching assistant in Northport's Summer Music Program. Annie danced ballet for fourteen years, and was selected to attend the Joffrey Ballet School Summer Intensive. Though she chose music as her primary focus, she looks to further explore the links between music and dance.
Annie attended Northport High School, studying in their Conservatory Program of theory/performance in addition to the IB Diploma, and was principle flute in all her ensembles. As part of the 300+ Northport Tiger Marching Band, she was appointed Drum Major her senior year. She was selected for the NYSSMA All-State Conference in the two years she was eligible, and was appointed principle flute of the Symphony Orchestra her senior year. Upon graduating, the Northport Observer featured Annie in an article honoring her musical career in the district.
This past spring, Annie was selected to perform in the New York Flute Club’s annual Flute Fair masterclass with guest artist Barthold Kuijken, leading her to become the member profile subject for their April newsletter. As an avid church musician, Annie has performed in various religious settings, including St. John the Divine and the Latino Pastoral Action Center in the Bronx for an interfaith service called “Together as One NYC”. She also specializes in meditative Taizè services.
All events are sponsored by Columbia University's Music Performance Program and are free and open to the public.
Mid-Day Music @ Columbia offers live music to a general audience, following the tradition established by Aaron Warner and Isidor Isaac Rabi, great lovers of music whose memories live on at Faculty House.
