Jazz Ensembles

LAJPP offers both undergraduate and graduate students jazz performance opportunities. There are a variety of jazz ensembles, both large and small, instrumental and vocal, that cover a wide range of musical styles. All ensembles perform at an intermediate level or higher and require some past jazz experience. The jazz ensembles include:

Jazz Combos

Jazz Voice

Free Jazz

Hybrid Arts Ensemble

All ensembles are offered as 1 credit course per semester. Additional information regarding jazz ensembles is listed below:

  • Live auditions are required and are only held during the first week of Fall classes.
  • All graduate and undergraduate students are eligible to audition for ensembles.
  • Registration for the appropriate jazz ensemble section is available only to those students who have auditioned and been admitted to the Music Performance Program.
  • Students admitted into the MPP during the Fall audition are admitted for both Fall & Spring of that academic year.
  • Ensemble rehearsals with the director/coach are approximately 1 hour per week (plus 30 minutes for set up).
  • Students are encouraged to rehearse as a group outside of the weekly sessions.
  • The course is graded via standard letter grades.
  • An end-of-semester performance serves as the "final exam".

On-Campus Performance Opportunities

In order to provide more performance opportunities for Columbia's jazz students and to bring more live jazz to campus, ensemble members perform at various social events around the campus throughout the school year.
