biography
SEIN AN (CC '19), 19, began violin at the age of three in Seoul, Korea. She received numerous awards in the competitions, such as the Grand Prize of the 16th International Violin Competition “Remember Enescu” in Romania, Honorable Mention in the Junior Division of the 2013 and the 2014 Philadelphia Orchestra Albert M. Greenfield Competition, 2009 North Carolina Symphony Concerto Competition, and the Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award through the NPR’s top-rated radio show From the Top, on which she has appeared three times. As a soloist, she has performed with the Wilmington Symphony, Temple University Symphony, Cairn University Symphony, Ambler Symphony, and North Carolina Symphony. In the summer, she has attended the Hotchkiss Summer Portals Chamber Music, Meadowmount School of Music, Mozarteum Summer Academy in Salzburg, Austria, National YoungArts Week in Miami, National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America, and most recently, the Ashkenasi-Kirshbaum chamber music seminar at the Heifetz Institute. Now a second- year student at Columbia University and the Juilliard School, Sein plans to major in economics and studies violin with Catherine Cho. In her free time, Sein enjoys baking treats for her one-year-old golden retriever, Ronks.
CYNTHIA (CINDY) LIU (CC ‘18), 21, is graduating with her B.A. in English and Sociology, with concentrations in Eating Like a Queen and Being Outspoken. Since beginning piano studies at age six, she feels grateful and honored to have annoyed her teacher emeritus, Elena Arseniev, and now her mentor, Dr. Magdalena Stern-Baczewska, with slouching, overly-zealous fortissimo, and problematic pedaling.
She was winner of the 2014 Music Teachers National Association Senior Piano Duet Competition with Brian Le, her four-hands partner-in-crime, and a finalist in the National Symphony Orchestra Young Artists’ Concerto Competition. Cindy has enjoyed performances in New York’s Carnegie and Steinway (the former--#rip) Halls; D.C.’s Kennedy Center Concert Hall and Hungarian & Austrian embassies; her parents’ hometowns in China, Beijing and Neixiang; Toronto; and for the family of composer Sergei Prokofiev in Paris. She co-founded the Intercollegiate Chamber Music Festival with Serina Chang (CC ‘19) and Dean Deng (CC ‘19), now in its second year, collaborating with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. She also enjoys yelling at the administration about Columbia's nonexistent performance space in a petition she wrote with Timothy Diovanni (CC '18). In her ongoing annihilation of the patriarchy, Cindy is completing her sociology thesis, entitled, "The Quadruple Bind: Occupational Barriers to Women in the Classical Music Industry," with plans to publish a book of the same title, and begins full-time in June 2018 at Park Avenue Artists in Chelsea. When she's not startling you with her passion or rushing her runs, you’ll find her procrastinating by online shopping or complaining.
