 BIOGRAPHY

Benjamin Preneta is a senior studying history and sustainable development in Columbia College.  Specializing in modern African history, he is writing a senior thesis on the Congo Crisis of the 1960s. Benjamin is also Commander of the Fordham University NYC Army ROTC Battalion and following graduation from Columbia, he will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Armor branch of the United States Army.  He began playing the violin in first grade and, after five years of study with violinist Sara Usher, switched to viola studying for seven years with San Francisco Conservatory of Music violist Madeline Prager.  Benjamin attended The Crowden School in Berkeley, which specializes in a strings-based music program, where he performed with numerous chamber groups, string orchestras, and participated in summer music workshops.  He has performed as principal violist with the San Francisco Conservatory Pre-College Division chamber orchestra under the direction of Eugene Sor, as violist in high school musical theater productions, and with the Youth Musical Theater Company.  At Columbia, Benjamin studies with violist Ah Ling Neu, has performed with several Music Performance Program chamber groups, in the Japanese Cultural Heritage Initiative Concert, and is a member for the past four years of the Columbia University Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Jeffrey Milarsky.  Benjamin is in his 11th year of viola study and looks forward to many more.

All events are sponsored by Columbia University's Music Performance Program and are free and open to the public.

Mid-Day Music @ Columbia offers live music to a general audience, following the tradition established by Aaron Warner and Isidor Isaac Rabi, great lovers of music whose memories live on at Faculty House.
