The Music Performance Program presents the Columbia Arab Music Ensemble and Bluegrass Ensemble in concert!

December 10, 2016 at 7PM
Teatro, Italian Academy

The Columbia Arab Music Ensemble (CAME) is a performance ensemble devoted to vocal and instrumental music from the Arab region. Directed by New York-based music scholar, oud player, percussionist and vocalist Taoufik Ben Amor (http://www.columbia.edu/cu/mesaas/faculty/directory/ben-amor.html). The group's repertoire, taught through oral transmission and memorization, includes songs and instrumental pieces from folk, popular, and classical genres of the region, emphasizing Maqam structure, rhythm cycles, genres, performance practices and poetic content.

Columbia's Bluegrass Ensemble was founded at Columbia in 2004, and has achieved a strong reputation on campus and in the community. Lion in the Grass plays at many campus functions throughout the year, and at neighborhood venues as well.  James Kerr, the instructor and coach, is a professional bluegrass dobro player and classical guitarist who has an extensive performing career.
