Join us for a senior recital featuring the incredible bassist and Columbia College senior, Eugene Zhang, on May 3rd at 8 PM at the Italian Academy.
Eugene is a bassist from Toronto, Canada, studying with Joseph Conyers in the Columbia-Juilliard exchange program. He is the first bassist to win the Columbia University Orchestra’s concerto competition, performing Tan Dun’s Wolf Totem concerto at Alice Tully Hall in April 2025. He enjoys exploring all facets of music-making, as a fellow at the Wabass Institute, National Repertory Orchestra, and the National Orchestral Institute; as a bassist in the Louis Armstrong Jazz Performance Program; and as Co-Music Director of Columbia Pops, where he arranges and conducts soundtracks from movies and video games. He is passionate about the intersectionality of different musical traditions and strives to inspire those around him to find community, have fun, and express their creativity with music. When not in the practice room, he can be found hiking, recreating restaurant dishes at home, and solving the New York Times crossword.
