Piano Literature and Performance 1900 - Present

October 16, 2024

Professor Magdalena Stern-Baczewska will offer a new course in Spring 2025 titled "Piano Literature and Performance 1900 - Present."

Spring 2025
Music UN3216 Section 001

You don’t have to be a pianist to join! This course is open to all students who wish to learn about the piano repertoire written between 1900 and the present day, with a focus on the performance aspects of the music. The course consists of four modules: European piano music prior to WWII; the American pioneers; the multiplicity of directions and cultural identities in piano music from 1945 to the present (including prepared piano, indeterminacy, integrated serialism, and minimalism); and the piano music of Columbia University composers (including electronic music at the Computer Music Center, spectral piano, the Center for United States-China Arts Exchange, and microtonal music). Through lectures, discussions, readings, listening, analysis, live performances, and guest presentations, we will explore the constantly evolving musical language and performance practices of piano music written in the last 125 years.
